Candidates must meet a minimum of 100 Core Requirement Points, pass the CTTP Examination, and complete their Applied Principles Project to obtain their CTTP certification as follows:
Industry Experience: Completion of the CTTP program requires a candidate to have a minimum of three years work experience in the tourism /hospitality field. Candidates who are new to the industry and who wish to gain the valuable professional education offered through the CTTP College may attend the College, but will not be eligible to receive their certification until the completion of the three year work experience requirement. CTTP Points Awarded for Industry Experience: Minimum required 3 years experience = 20 points; additional 5 points for each year above 3 years to a maximum of an additional 20 points.
CTTP College: The CTTP College provides formal class work instruction focusing on three areas: Tourism/Destination Leadership, Tourism/Destination Marketing, and Tourism/Travel Industry Research. It also provides an opportunity for participants to gain a broad understanding of the tourism product in Tennessee and of the various resources available to assist them in developing and marketing their individual areas/product. Instructors at the CTTP College are made up of faculty members from the University of Tennessee Tourism Institute and experienced travel industry professionals.
The CTTP College is also an excellent educational resource for individuals who are new to the tourism industry. Such individuals may attend the CTTP College, take the examination, and complete their Applied Principles Project, and then receive their CTTP certification at a later time after meeting the elective points and length of industry service requirements.For information on this year's CTTP College, click here.
CTTP Points Awarded for CTTP College: Required CTTP College participation = 30 points
Elective Credits: CTTP candidates are awarded points based on the following: formal education; membership in, service to, and certifications from other travel/tourism/hospitality organizations and associations; prior industry seminar attendance or seminar presentations/speeches personally given; and the completion of special tourism industry projects, papers, or industry research projects. Credits are awarded by the TTR Education Committee based on the information provided by candidates in their CTTP Application.
CTTP Points Awarded for Elective Areas:
Education: Associate Degree = 15 points
Bachelor's Degree = 30 points
Bachelor's Degree in Tourism/Hospitality Field = 35 points Post Graduate Degree = 40 points College courses in Tourism/Hospitality Field = 2 points per course, maximum of 8 points
Industry Certifications such as CHA, CTIS, CDME, etc.: 8 points per certification, maximum of 32 points
Industry Seminar/Workshop Attendance (since 1995): 1-2 hrs. = 1 point; 1/2 day = 2 points; 1 full day = 4 points; TN Governor's Conference on Tourism = 10 points
Travel/Tourism/Hospitality Industry Trade Show attendance/exhibitor (since 1995): 1 point per show, max 3 points per year; maximum total of 12 points.
Guest Speaker/Panelist at Tourism-Related Meeting (since 1995): 1 point per engagement, max 3 points per year, maximum total of 12 points.
Service as Board Member of National, State, or Local Tourism-Related Association (since 1995): 1 point for each year of service, maximum of 4 points
Fam Tour participation: Within your region = 1 point each, max 2 points; Outside your region = 2 points each, max 4 points
Miscellaneous Credits for items such as published writings in tourism/travel-related publications, approved independent studies, special projects, etc.: 1 to 25 points as determined by TTR Education Committee.
Examination: Candidates must successfully pass the CTTP examination with a minimum score of 70% or higher. The CTTP Examination will be available on-line following the CTTP College and is administered by the UT Tourism Institute. Candidates have 60 days following the conclusion of the CTTP College to take the examination.
Applied Principles Project: Following the completion of the CTTP College, candidates must take a specific aspect of the College course work and find an application of that principle in their individual workplace. They must then write and submit a brief written report on how the principle was implemented and it's effectiveness in their situation. Guidelines for the Applied Principles Project and the written report will be given at the CTTP College. Candidates have 60 days following the completion of the College to submit their project report.
